Boston University: The Program on the Social and Economic Impacts of the AIDS Epidemic Print E-mail

The Program on the Social and Economic Impacts of the AIDS Epidemic is a multidisciplinary, applied research program of the Center for International Health and Development (CIHD) at the Boston University School of Public Health. It brings together expertise in economics, infectious diseases, public health, demography, and epidemiology in an effort to understand how the AIDS epidemic is affecting households, businesses, government agencies, and other institutions in the developing world and to identify, and evaluate policies and programs to mitigate the impact of AIDS.

South Africa

In South Africa, the CIHD works in partnership with the Health Economics Research Office (HERO), a unit of the Wits Health Consortium at the University of the Witwatersrand.  CIHD and HERO offices are located on the campus of the Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg.  Several studies are currently underway and some of these are:

  • Social and economic outcomes of HIV/AIDS treatment.
  • Cost-effectiveness of models of delivering antiretroviral therapy in South Africa.
  • HIV/AIDS services for small and medium enterprises.
