JBIC and SABCOHA implement workplace capacity programmes
9 May 2008
Working with the Japan Bank for International Co-operation (JBIC), SABCOHA conducted a programme in several leading companies operating in South Africa. The programme focused on HIV/AIDS capacity building to tackle falling productivity and rising costs resulting from absenteeism and deaths.
A number of interventions were set up through the programme, ranging from developing a database of HIV/AIDS service providers to training peer educators and conducting management training.
Programme findings were presented at a breakfast on 9 May 2008 at the Hyatt Regency in Johannesburg. Six automotive manufacturers and one mining company, Hernic Ferrochrome, participated.

Re-emphasizing HIV prevention in the workplace
7 August
The shift in focus towards treatment for HIV positive employees should not overtake the importance of HIV prevention in workforces. Businesses need to think innovatively and target HIV prevention intervention programmes more effectively. This is the key message to emerge from a presentation at a SABCOHA breakfast in Illovo, Johannesburg, on August 7 by Debbie Muirhead and Andrew Van Zyl, health economists with the Aurum Institute of Health Research.

Regional Workshop on HIV in the Road Transport Sector in Southern Africa
28 September 2007
The International Organisation for Migration, in conjunction with the World Food Programme, the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC), the North Star Foundation, and the United Nations Joint Programme on HIV/AIDS, held a Regional Workshop on HIV in the Road Transport Sector for Southern Africa from 26 to 28 September 2007 at Piggs Peak, in Swaziland.
The workshop's specific objectives were to share lessons learned of HIV responses in the road transport sector in southern Africa; to facilitate networking and increased co-ordination among partners and stakeholders working in the road transport sector in
selected countries, and among different agencies implementing HIV initiatives in the road transport sector, to avoid duplication and to strengthen and upscale responses; and to outline a way forward for future interventions and activities.
Participants came from the SADC secretariat, SADC governments, the private sector, the donor community, international organisations, civil society, and research institutions. The wealth of this multi-national and multi-sectoral diversity encouraged extensive sharing of lessons and, based on these lessons, it facilitated agreement on the main way forward.
