The South African Business Coalition on HIV & Aids (SABCOHA) supports and acknowledges the decisive leadership being taken by the South African government as it prepares to release its National Strategic Plan for 2012 – 2016 on World Aids Day this year. “The commitment and investment by both government and business to make a significant difference to our current HIV statistics can be seen in the numbers released by the Minister of Health this week. Investment in education, testing and treatment has seen the decline, albeit slight, in the number of new infections, but a dramatic uptake of over 1 million people having access to life saving anti-retrovirals,” says Brad Mears, CEO – SABCOHA.
Mears adds, “The new National Strategic Plan (NSP) although inclusive, still lacks key human rights elements, which have not been addressed. These include the evaluation of the legislation that deals specifically with HIV and the call for decriminalization of sex workers, something which is supported by SABCOHA. We hope to create further discussion and engagement around these issues.”
