A key strategic goal of SABCOHA over the next two years is to establish SABCOHA structures across all the provinces, including KZN. Planned activities include:
- Door-to-door stakeholder consultations across all eleven local government districts of KZN. The first district visit was conducted in the Umgungundlovu district during August 2010. This resulted in two workshops aimed at empowering and supporting companies to implement HIV and AIDS and Wellness programmes in the workplace. More than a hundred companies were reached during this initial process.
- Developing provincial business sector strategies that identify business sector commitments and priorities in support of the National Strategic Plan (NSP) and the HIV Counselling and Testing (HCT) Campaign.
- Encouraging and facilitating provincial business sector monitoring and reporting through the specially developed web-based reporting tool, Bizwell. The Bizwell system provides a platform to record, collate and reflect the contribution of the business sector to the national HCT campaign.
- Facilitating the election of a business sector Board of Governors, comprising company representatives.
DISTRICT WORKSHOPS
The district workshops target Managers and Coordinators responsible for developing and implementing workplace HIV, AIDS, TB and Wellness Programmes. Workshops outcomes aim to:
- Communicate progress in coordinating the business sector’s response to HIV and AIDS in the provinces
- Understand the context and importance of assessing the risks of HIV and AIDS
- Develop and implement a HIV and AIDS policy in line with minimum legal requirements
- Promote a strategic approach to managing HIV and AIDS in the workplace ensuring accountability.
To date, ten workshops have been facilitated across six districts of KZN. More than 70% of the delegates represented companies. These workshops can be presented on request. Please contact Penny Dlamini (

RECENT EVENTS
SABCOHA recently convened a KZN Business Sector Conference on HIV and AIDS, STIs and TB and Wellness which took place on 26 and 27 October 2011 in Durban. Entitled “Strategic Spending for Saving and Sustainability”, the conference was well supported by the private sector with endorsements and buy in from all the business chambers within the province. It turned out to be one of the most inclusive private sector conference undertaken by SABCOHA this year.
The message of support and commitment to the SABCOHA process was re-iterated by the KZN Premier, Dr Z. Mkhize who challenged the business sector to come on board with other sectors in pursuit of the vision of creating “a prosperous province with a healthy, secure and skilled population that acts as the gateway to Africa and the World. To this effect, the Premier invited the conference to put forward names of ten representatives to participate in the KZN Provincial AIDS Council representing the business sector.

CLUSTER INITIATIVES IN KZN
|
|
Durban Automotive Cluster (DAC)
SABCOHA signed an agreement with the Durban Automotive Cluster (DAC) in July 2008 to implement HIV/AIDS management programmes in their organisations' vendor supply chains. This project rapidly assumed flagship status and is an example of a well co-ordinated initiative. All the initial capacity building stages have been accomplished as training for management, steering committees and wellness champions, as well as peer educator training, have been completed.
Shell and BP South African Petroleum Refiners (SAPREF)
SABCOHA signed an agreement with Shell and BP South African Petroleum Refiners (SAPREF) in July 2008 to implement HIV and AIDS management programmes in their organisations' vendor supply chains. The project has already made tremendous progress as the first cluster of ten SAPREF companies has participated in management training, steering committee and champion training, as well as peer educator training.
