Provincialisation Process

Introduction

In 2007 SABCOHA considered a more impactful approach to support business sector’s contribution in their response to HIV and Wellness. The establishment of a branch in the North West will strengthen representation of the business sector on multi-sectoral structures and processes at provincial and district levels.

The extensive process of provincial systems strengthening in North West commenced in August 2010 with a door to door stakeholder consultation in all four districts, this amongst business, government and civil society stakeholders. To date, over 100 business entities have been consulted including business associations and chambers. Considerable progress has been made with key government departments and NGOs rendering HIV related services.

Key to this process is development of the provincial business sector strategy that will identify business sector commitments and priorities in support of the NSP and HCT Campaign. An appointment of a board of governors is key to ensure the effective implementation of the provincial strategy.

Partners

This is the only province in the country where the Provincial Council on AIDS (PCA) operates as a government-supported institution, for purposes of addressing the HIV & AIDS epidemic.  With a staff compliment of about 60, the PCA is led by a CEO who is directly accountable to the Premier. SABCOHA has been working closely with the PCA, whose role is to monitor and co-ordinate programmes and strategies employed to address HIV & AIDS issues.

Bizwell in province

SABCOHA is providing technical assistance to companies and service providers to report HCT related data on the Bizwell web-based reporting tool. Companies can use this platform to pledge their commitment to the HCT campaign. SABCOHA offers technical assistance to companies who would like to be supported in uploading data on Bizwell. Events

By the end of first quarter of 2011, SABCOHA has successfully completed over 15 district workshops across six provinces. Three of these were held in three districts in the North West. The workshops are designed to empower businesses on policy development, monitoring and evaluation and effective implementation of workplace programmes. In offering capacity development to companies, SABCOHA is pleased that 40% participants were from large corporates and 60% from small and medium enterprises. The workshops aim to strengthen capacity to implement workplace HIV and AIDS and Wellness programmes and include everything from assessing, planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating.
