The Trucking Wellness Programme was launched in 1999 by the National Bargaining Council for the Road Freight Industry (NBCRFI) to create awareness around HIV/AIDS and STIs among long-distance truck drivers and commercial sex workers, two of the groups to which the spread of HIV in the country is often attributed. While the vision of the Programme is to create an industry free from the burden of HIV and AIDS, we need to be aware that the implications of an epidemic left unchecked in the road freight industry would be catastrophic for the countrys economy as a whole because most other sectors depend on or are linked to the transport industry and 80% of all goods are transported by road.
