A wide range of research is available to assist businesses in developing their strategies to combat HIV/AIDS. These are summarised here with links to the relevant organisation’s websites for more information. Through continuous research, and the development of best practice, SABCOHA seeks to expand the body of knowledge on how the private sector can proactively respond to the epidemic.

Business can use research more effectively in guiding policy development even though the conclusions of many studies on HIV/AIDS seem to conflict:

  • Business has key roles to play in unlocking funds for future research, for sharing and co-ordinating their research and in forming partnerships for action research.
  • Research must be subjected to a process of co-ordination and quality control and duplication must be avoided.
  • Research must adopt a more proactive stance and focus on the future as well as the present.
  • A balance must be struck between qualitative and quantitative research - numbers and statistics are not always the ‘holy grail’ and must be treated with caution.
  • Research must be evidence-based and - as a tool for evaluation - is a necessary and ongoing aspect of any HIV/AIDS programme to ascertain whether it is working.
  • More research is needed on the behavioural aspects around HIV and AIDS.
