The reconstituted South African National AIDS Council (SANAC), the lead agency in the fight against HIV/AIDS, was officially launched at the beginning of May 2007 and is chaired by Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka. SANAC has endorsed the The National Strategic HIV and AIDS Plan for 2007 – 2011 (NSP) . The main goal of the five-year plan is to reduce the rate of new HIV infections and mitigate the effect of AIDS on individuals, families and communities. Launched on April 30, the new five-year HIV/AIDS plan for the country – the process of an intensive period of consultation with key stakeholders – heralds a new era of co-operation between the private and public sectors in the fight against HIV/AIDS. New sector representatives were elected to SANAC. Commented SABCOHA CEO Brad Mears: "SANAC is now properly constituted and will begin the work of extending the National Strategic Plan from a strategic document to an operational working document, a process that business, government, labour and civil society have already started at Nedlac." The NSP has been praised for setting clear targets for the next five years: cutting new HIV infections by half; getting treatment, care and support to 80 percent of people who are known to be HIV-positive; upping VCT levels to 70 percent of the population; and reducing mother-to-child infection rates to less than five percent. SANAC’s membership includes the government at a ministerial level, and leaders of business, labour and civil society. SABCOHA continues to play a key role in SANAC which is the co-ordinating body through which resources from the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and malaria are channelled. SABCOHA strives to play a supportive role at all times to the council.
